University of Louisville/Glasgow Family Medicine Residency Program – Established 1997

About the Program

The University of Louisville/Glasgow Family Medicine Residency Program focuses on providing high-quality training in a supportive and collaborative environment. Residents benefit from:

  • Extensive Training Sites: Including T.J. Samson Community Hospital and Norton Children’s Hospital.
  • Diverse Clinical Rotations: Covering inpatient, outpatient, and specialized care areas.
  • Strong Faculty Support: Our board-certified faculty provide mentorship and guidance throughout the residency.

We participate in the NRMP and accept applications only via ERAS through December 31. Preference is given to applicants who have graduated medical school within the last two (2) years.

We require:

  • Permanent residency or US citizenship (We can ONLY sponsor a J1 clinical visa).
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from US sources with direct knowledge of clinical skill and knowledge base.
  • Applicants MUST pass Steps I & II of the USMLE/COMLEX.
    If it takes an applicant more than two (2) attempts to pass either step, he/she will not be competitive.
  • ECFMG certification for international medical graduates

Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum is designed to equip residents with the skills necessary to excel in Family Medicine in any clinical setting. Each year builds on the previous, with increasing levels of responsibility and specialization.

Residents experience a structured call schedule designed to balance training with personal well-being. Night float and weekend call rotations ensure comprehensive exposure without burnout.

    Year 1

    Post-Graduate Year 1

    • Focus on core rotations in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine.
    • Intensive inpatient service experience and critical care exposure.

    Post Graduate Year 1:

    3 weeks vacation plus 1 week holiday time

    Year 2

    • Advanced training in specialties such as Cardiology and Orthopedics.
    • Chief of Service roles provide leadership and administrative experience.

      Post Graduate Year 2:

      3 weeks vacation plus 1 week holiday time, and 1 week CME

      Year 3

      • Elective rotations allow residents to explore areas of interest and further develop their expertise.
      • Leadership in outpatient and hospital settings, preparing residents for independent practice.

      Post Graduate Year 3:

      3 weeks vacation plus 1 week holiday time, and 1 week CME

      Year 1

      Curriculum/Block & Call Schedule

       

        • Family Medicine Center/Community Medicine (4 weeks – one to two half days/week)
        • Orientation, BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP (the week prior to July 1)
        • Orientation/Family Medicine Hospital Service (2-3 weeks)
        • Family Medicine Hospital Service (13 weeks)
          (includes 1 week during holiday schedule*)
        • OB/Peri I (4 weeks)
        • General Surgery (4 weeks)
        • GYN (4 weeks)
        • Outpatient Pediatrics (4 weeks)
        • Pediatric Wards at Norton Children’s Hospital (4 weeks)
        • Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Norton Children’s Hospital (4 weeks)
        • Emergency Medicine and Night Float (4 weeks)
        • Behavorial Health/Substance Abuse (2 weeks)
        • Pain Management (2 weeks)

      * The holiday schedule allows the residents to work in shifts during the last two weeks of December for half the time and take vacation the other half.

      * Didactics 5 – 6 hours/week, usually 1.5 hours on Tuesday and .5 hours on Wednesday & Thursday mornings and 3-4 hours on Friday afternoon.

      Year 2

          • Family Medicine Center (4 weeks – two to three half days/week)
          • Family Medicine Hospital Service Chief of Service (5 weeks)
            (includes 1 week during holiday schedule)
          • Orthopedics/Sports Medicine Outpatient (4 weeks)
          • Cardiology I: Inpatient (4 weeks)
          • Emergency Medicine and Night Float (12 weeks)
          • Outpatient Pediatrics (4 weeks)
          • Ophthalmology (2 weeks)
          • Urology (2 weeks)
          • Electives (8 weeks)
          • Inpatient Pulmonary, includes critical care (4 weeks)
          • Radiology (2 weeks)
          • ATLS (optional)
          • Conference time taken in any combination of 5 days (1 week)

          Vacation taken one week at a time during certain rotations (4 weeks)
          (includes 1 week during the holiday schedule*)

      * The holiday schedule allows the residents to work in shifts during the last two weeks of December for half the time and take vacation the other half.

          • Outpatient Neurology (2 weeks)
          • Electives (16 weeks)
          • OB/Peri II (4 weeks)
          • Geriatrics (4 weeks)
          • Family Medicine Outpatient (1 week)
            (during holiday schedule)
          • Nephrology (2 weeks)
          • Podiatry (2 weeks)
          • ATLS (optional)
          • Conference time taken in any combination of days
