Our Requirements

We participate in the NRMP and accept applications only via ERAS through December 31. Preference is given to applicants who have graduated medical school within the last two (2) years.

We Require:

  • Permanent residency or US citizenship (We can ONLY sponsor a J1 clinical visa).
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from US sources with direct knowledge of clinical skill and knowledge base.
  • Applicants MUST pass Steps I & II of the USMLE/COMLEX.
    If it takes an applicant more than two (2) attempts to pass either step, he/she will not be competitive.
  • ECFMG certification for international medical graduates

Training Sites

Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, is a facility dedicated exclusively to the treatment of infants, children, and adolescents. Norton provides advanced care in pediatrics ranging from minor injuries to rare, life-threatening diseases.

The T.J. Regional Health’s mission is to help engage our community more fully in exceptional specialized healthcare programs, patient care and technology.

The School of Medicine, located near downtown Louisville, is part of the modern Health Sciences Center that includes the Schools of Dentistry and Nursing and the College of Health and Social Services.

Focus on core rotations in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine. Intensive inpatient service experience and critical care exposure.

Advanced training in specialties such as Cardiology and Orthopedics. Chief of Service roles provide leadership and administrative experience.

Elective rotations allow residents to explore areas of interest and further develop their expertise. Leadership in outpatient and hospital settings, preparing residents for independent practice.

Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum is designed to equip residents with the skills necessary to excel in Family Medicine in any clinical setting. Each year builds on the previous, with increasing levels of responsibility and specialization.

Residents experience a structured call schedule designed to balance training with personal well-being. Night float and weekend call rotations ensure comprehensive exposure while helping prevent burnout.

Program Information

Post Graduate Year 1

  • Focus on core rotations in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine.
  • Intensive inpatient service experience and critical care exposure.
  • 3 weeks vacation plus 1 week holiday time
  • The holiday schedule allows the residents to work in shifts during the last two weeks of December for half the time and take vacation the other half.

  • Didactics 5 – 6 hours/week, usually 1.5 hours on Tuesday and .5 hours on Thursday mornings and 3-4 hours on Friday afternoon.

Curriculum/Block & Call Schedule  

    • Family Medicine Center (FMC) Continuity Clinic one to two half-days/week

    • FMC/Community Medicine (4 weeks)

    • Orientation, BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP (the week prior to July 1)
    • Orientation/Family Medicine Hospital Service (3-4 weeks)
    • Family Medicine Hospital Service (13 weeks)
      (includes 1 week during holiday schedule*)
    • OB/Peri I (4 weeks)
    • General Surgery (4 weeks)
    • GYN (4 weeks)
    • Outpatient Pediatrics (4 weeks)
    • Pediatric Wards at Norton Children’s Hospital (4 weeks)
    • Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Norton Children’s Hospital (4 weeks)
    • Emergency Medicine and Night Float (4 weeks)
    • Behavorial Health/Substance Abuse (2 weeks)
    • Pain Management (2 weeks)

    • Conference time taken in any combination of 5 days (1 week)

Post Graduate Year 3

  • Elective rotations allow residents to explore areas of interest and further develop their expertise.
  • Leadership in outpatient and hospital settings, preparing residents for independent practice.
  • 3 weeks vacation plus 1 week holiday time, and 1 week CME
